Episode Recap

Outer Banks season 3 episode 1 picks up with the saga of Trader Gold behind us and John B and the gang building their own paradise on the beach – Poguelandia. JJ and Kie go hunting together, and Sara begins to buy an IUD, believing that her father is coming by boat to get her. John B assures him that this is not the case, and the gang eventually return to their familiar routines. That is, until morning when a plane appears and the kids try to get his attention by asking for a lift home.

Jimmy, the pilot, is quite eccentric and a bit shady, but he encourages them to come on board all the same. He was seeing fish, which seemed to add to John B’s anxiety. The boy also has a log that shows he’s curvy, and they eventually make him crash land on a beach just off the Barbados coastline.

Crash-landing benefits kids who are perfectly fine. As for Jimmy, he passed out behind the wheel. Kie helps her, but she gets separated from the others on the beach. That’s bad news, especially when kids on quad bikes put on a show. Kie was captured and taken away. Others are forced to watch helplessly.

In the ensuing chaos, JJ steals Jimmy’s wallet, including the cash and address. He deduces that Kie is being kept as bait to lure the children, but the group intends to pounce on them first.

Kie is not at home, but a painting on the wall refers to the boat San Jose where the cross was found. When Jimmy returns, the guys question him and learn that Ki is being held at Vaux Hall, which Jimmy “really doesn’t want to go”. In particular, they don’t want to cross paths with Carlos Singh, who is responsible for the acres and the big house on the hill. He is also quite the treasure hunter.

A Frenchman named Michel comes to see Rafe. He is incredibly interested in the cross and believes his client will want to see it. Rafe is summoned to Barbados, where he crosses paths with Kie and his potential buyer, Carlos.

Sitting down to eat, Carlos emphasizes that he is focused on another treasure, the completion of a great adventure that dates back 500 years. It’s a secret passed down to Carlos, and he intends to try to wrap it up. Part of this comes from finding a diary that John B and the group had.

The group tries (and fails) to break into Carlos’ compound with dogs, armed guards, and many other security details making it impossible to get Kie. Unfortunately, Carlos is serious and both Kie and Rafe are forced to watch as Jimmy is taken back and shot.

  Episode Review

The Outer Banks is back, and ahead of its release, the series confirmed that it will return for a 4th season, which is great news. This almost certainly confirms that this series will end on a cliffhanger, but at least we know the story will continue, so it’s not too much of a problem if it does.

The plot so far is fast-paced, crazy and engrossing, with the promise of a new treasure hunt on the horizon and plenty of reasons to be optimistic. The series continues to deliver thrilling set pieces, and the failed attempt to break into Carlos’ compound is a great way to demonstrate just how dangerous and powerful this man is.

It should be a pretty interesting season though, and if this ending is anything to go by, we could be in for quite the rollercoaster ride.
