Episode Recap
Outer Banks season 3 episode 2 begins with Cleo taking the group to an abandoned hotel on the beach. Carlos’s men are still after them, but they manage to evade detection and try to come up with a new plan to take out Kie. The thing is, the only viable solution here is to get Denmark’s agenda, which Kie refuses to give up.
Rafe realizes that Kie is lying and is aware of the diary. He asks for an audience with Singh, ignoring Rafe’s pleas to trust him and managing to talk the big boss down. He promises to buy her a copy, but wants to go alone. Singh laughs in disbelief and is about to plead with Kie… until his phone rings.
JJ also managed to steal Jimmy’s phone in the last episode and sealed the deal by texting Carlos Singh, unaware that the boy was dead. He writes that he caught Sarah and that John B. Carlos was playing together, but that he tracked the phone and located them. JJ tries to turn things to his advantage, deciding to stalk the area to get the jump on the soldiers.
It works well, only two soldiers are sent inside and JJ manages to jump over the soldiers (literally). After tying them up and stealing their guns, John B calls Carlos and tries to bargain by offering to kill the two soldiers. Singh laughs and calls his bluff and offers to do it.
Outside, the gang is forced to flee down an abandoned elevator shaft as the hotel is completely surrounded. Just before the jump, John B hears bells ringing from the hill, which reminds him of his father, Big John. As we know, this was Big John’s call to bring his son home.
The kids leave the hotel and evade the surprisingly lax security detail around them. At the same time, Rafe and Kie work together and manage to escape from the bedroom, ahead of the guard outside the gate of the compound.
In fact, they also take it out, stationed outside on top of a truck. Rafe manages to get Kie a boat, but she double-crosses him and sets off alone, intent on finding John B and the others.
Kie sends them a message with a meeting place by the docks. JJ invalidly goes first, given that they were double-crossed before. But it actually turns out to be Kie and the reunited band.
John B refuses to go with them until he checks out the church first. Sarah gives him the green light to go and he jumps off and heads for the marina. It’s probably just as well, since Carlos Singh’s men came to the port and tried to capture them. Despite a whole bunch of bullets being fired at them, they manage to escape.
As for John B, he arrives at the church unaware of all that is happening and prays that the bells are a sign that his father is still alive.
Episode Review
The rescue operation goes awry for Kie, but it doesn’t matter anyway because she finds her way out without teaming up with Rafe. Maybe it’s just me, but given the lengths they went to to catch Ki and bring him home, you’d think they’d have more than one man guarding the house, right?
Either way, Kie has now joined the fold and Carlos Singh looks like a formidable foe for the future. The group splits up once again, but this time John B sets out to call home and find his father. This meeting should be a great inclusion, while the unusual landscape makes for a visually pleasing watch this time around, with plenty of drone footage of John B climbing over the landscape.
The show has a lot of potential to really kick into high gear this year, and the teasing between the two sides seems like the perfect catalyst to make this new treasure hunt happen.
